About this route
The Lohusalu to Tallinn yacht route (21.29 NM) runs northeast along Estonia’s north coast, crossing the Gulf of Finland’s southern approaches. Departing Lohusalu (59.40268,24.20667), you’ll initially follow a coastal contour before heading offshore toward Tallinn.
Navigational hazards: The area off Lohusalu is scattered with underwater rocks and shallow patches, especially near the shoreline. Maintain a safe distance from the coast and follow the plotted track closely. As you approach the Tallinn Bay, be aware of isolated shoals and unmarked rocks, particularly near headlands and inlets.
Traffic & sea state: Expect moderate to heavy commercial traffic, especially near Tallinn’s approaches. Ferries, cargo ships, and fast vessels operate at all hours. Maintain a sharp lookout and monitor VHF channel 16. The open stretch between Lohusalu and Tallinn is exposed to northerly and westerly winds, which can quickly raise a steep chop or short swell, especially in strong breeze. Wind against current may create confused seas near the bay entrance.
Shelter options: In deteriorating weather, Lohusalu marina offers immediate refuge at the start. Mid-route, there are limited options; consider returning to Lohusalu or diverting to Kakumäe marina (west of Tallinn) for shelter. Upon arrival,
