Much of the western Black Sea coast has sandy beaches and resort towns, while low-lying shores and river deltas characterise the northwest. Along the southern and eastern shores, forested mountains often rise close to the sea. Ashore, historic port towns, ancient monuments and local food offer varied experiences from one country to another.
There are few islands, so sailing here centres on passages along the mainland coast. Long exposed stretches separate some stops, while a crossing to the opposite shore can take several days. Strong winds can bring rough seas along these routes.
Summer is the main season to consider for a sailing trip: coastal weather is warm and the sea warms up for swimming. However, rain remains a feature of the Turkish coast and the southeast even in summer. Outside the warmer months, cold and stormy weather make sailing more demanding, especially in the northern part of the sea.
Watch out for: Route planning needs to account for military risks, sea mines and current navigation restrictions. Access to individual coasts and ports must be checked against up-to-date official notices.
