Between Sweden and Finland, Åland combines archipelago sailing, small island harbours and a strong seafaring heritage.
Åland Islands
East of Åland’s main island, smaller islands are separated by a network of channels. Routes here can revolve around island stops, while approaches from Sweden and passages to the outer islands involve open water.
The sea moderates the climate but warms slowly in spring. Even in summer, a passage can feel cooler than a sheltered shore; outer and inner parts of the archipelago offer different conditions.
Rocky shoals and narrow passages make detailed charts central to route planning. A nearby island does not always mean a short, direct passage.
In Mariehamn, the maritime museum and four-masted barque Pommern tell the story of seafaring. Smaller islands offer fishing villages, old pilot stations and walks among rocks and coastal meadows.

From a Schengen port
A direct journey within Schengen normally needs no external-border clearance; temporary checks remain possible.

From a port outside Schengen
Plan the first call at an operating border crossing point that accepts pleasure boats.
- Before departure, confirm the port, timing and notification procedure with the border authority. Prepare travel documents, yacht particulars and a list of everyone aboard.
- Haapasaari, Santio and the port of Nuijamaa are closed to leisure boating. Before planning a route involving a Russian port, check current restrictions with the Finnish Border Guard.
Customs is a separate matter
Schengen governs the movement of people; customs requirements for the yacht and goods depend on the route and their status. Check your circumstances with Customs before arrival. Åland belongs to the EU but lies outside its VAT and excise territory: a passage from the mainland can involve separate customs formalities.
