The eastern Gulf of Finland is an area of a major port city, Kotlin Island and historic sea fortifications. Saint Petersburg and Kronstadt shape the experience ashore through palaces, museums, waterfronts and naval history. A city visit can be the main reason for a stop, while sailing takes place near major shipping routes.

A summer cruise here differs greatly from sailing in the colder part of the year. The eastern Gulf of Finland is much more affected by winter ice than Kaliningrad’s open coast. Rough seas become more frequent on both coasts in autumn, and shorter days leave less time for passages.

The Kaliningrad coast has a different character. Long beaches and sandy spits separate the seashore from lagoons; the Curonian Spit is known for its dunes and forests. This is a separate Baltic area with its own approaches and port waters. Entry by a private yacht and access to any particular area require separate confirmation.
