Latvia’s sailing is more open-coast than archipelago. Riga and Liepāja are the main practical hubs, with smaller stops along a long, sandy Baltic shoreline. The Gulf of Riga can feel more sheltered, while the western coast is more exposed to Baltic swell and wind.

For a first visit, expect manageable navigation but fewer bailout options than in Finland or Sweden. Tides are not the issue; wind direction, harbour entry conditions and the distance to the next safe stop matter more. Weather windows should be chosen conservatively, especially on the open west coast.

Marina infrastructure is useful in the main ports but not dense. Latvia works best for crews linking Baltic countries, combining city stops with quieter coastal legs, and keeping enough flexibility for changing wind and sea state.
