Latvia offers passages along sandy shores, small fishing ports and an approach to Riga along the broad Daugava.

Latvia lends itself to a harbour-to-harbour trip. In the west, long sandy shores face the open Baltic; beyond Cape Kolka lies the Gulf of Riga. There is no island belt providing continuous shelter, so wind and waves have a strong influence on each passage.
Summer brings warmer weather and more time for stops ashore, though rain and strong winds are possible even at the height of the season. By late autumn, cold and more frequent rough seas change the character of a cruise, particularly along the exposed western coast.
City stops change the feel of the journey. Liepāja combines a working port with broad beaches, while the Daugava leads to a large capital with a historic centre. Between the towns are pine forests, dunes and small coastal settlements. The Livonian Coast preserves the fishing culture of the Livonians, a distinctive part of this Baltic shoreline.

From a Schengen port
Routine border clearance normally does not apply to a direct passage within Schengen; checks remain possible.
- Carry valid travel documents. Check temporary controls on the route and port requirements before departure.
From outside Schengen
Arrange the first call at a port with suitable border-clearance facilities in advance.
- Confirm with Valsts robežsardze and the port whether this yacht can be cleared and which documents and notifications are needed. Prepare vessel details and a list of everyone aboard. Each person’s entry eligibility is a separate matter.
Customs — separately
A Schengen route alone does not remove customs obligations. Ask VID about the boat and goods, taking account of the departure country, the vessel’s customs status and applicable restrictions.
