Whitby marinas
Whitby on the Yorkshire coast is a fishing town at the mouth of the Esk, with abbey ruins above its harbour.
Whitby
Whitby lies between high shores where the River Esk reaches the North Sea. Old-town houses surround the harbour, and the abbey ruins stand on the eastern headland.
The harbour runs directly into town: a swing bridge links the waterfronts on either bank. Arrivals first enter the lower harbour, while the route to yacht berths farther upriver passes through the bridge.
A stop can include walking through narrow streets and climbing to the abbey. Fishing vessels, old quays, and the beach on the west side reveal different aspects of the town during a single shore walk.
