IJmuiden

IJmuiden is Amsterdam’s western gateway: entry from the North Sea into the essentially tideless North Sea Canal via the world’s largest sea lock; yachts use Seaport Marina by the breakwaters, with busy traffic and VTS/Locks on VHF 61/22.

About IJmuiden

IJmuiden sits at the mouth of the North Sea Canal leading directly to the Port of Amsterdam; waters behind the locks are effectively non-tidal.

The complex includes the new IJmuiden Sea Lock (about 500 × 70 × 18 m, commissioned in 2022), the largest in the world. Recreational craft normally use the small south lock; the locks operate 24/7; call the lock on VHF 22 and monitor Port Control on VHF 61 after departure.

IJmuiden is the western access point to the Standing Mast Route towards Amsterdam. The harbour entrance is protected by long breakwaters; immediately inside lies Seaport Marina IJmuiden with fuel and services.

Expect commercial and ferry traffic (DFDS IJmuiden–Newcastle) under Port of Amsterdam VTS.
