Greek sailing changes dramatically by area. The Ionian is usually the easiest first step, with sheltered coasts, short legs and afternoon breezes. The Saronic and Argolic gulfs work well from Athens and give dense options for a one-week route. The Cyclades are more exposed, while the Dodecanese, Sporades, northern Aegean and Crete each have their own wind and shelter logic.

For a first visit, the main question is where, not simply when. In summer, the Meltemi can make the Aegean demanding for days at a time, especially between islands and on exposed approaches. Tides are small, but wind acceleration, ferry traffic and lee-shore choices matter.

Infrastructure is broad but varied: some nights are in full marinas, others on town quays, mooring lines or anchorages. Greece rewards crews who choose a cruising ground that fits their experience, keep distances realistic and leave room for wind days rather than trying to force an island checklist.
