Saaremaa is the main island destination in Estonia and a natural anchor point for west-Estonian cruising. Kuressaare gives the island its clearest yacht hub, while the surrounding coast offers a mix of sheltered inner waters, small harbours and more exposed Baltic edges.

For a first visit, expect variety. The Väinameri side is generally more protected but shallow and channel-led, while the outer coast and the Sõrve area need more attention to wind and sea state. Distances are manageable, but weather can still decide whether a route feels easy or demanding.

Saaremaa works well for crews who want island cruising with real shore interest, not just a technical stop. It pairs naturally with Muhu, Hiiumaa and mainland Estonia, and rewards routes that leave time for both harbour planning and exploring ashore.
