Bilbao grew along the Nervión, inland from the mouth of its estuary. The former industrial city is known for contemporary architecture, the Guggenheim Museum and riverside promenades. Its old town retains narrow streets and lively bars serving pintxos, small Basque snacks.
The yacht harbours are closer to the sea, in Getxo and Santurtzi, so visiting central Bilbao generally involves a journey by land. Around the estuary mouth, beaches, Algorta’s old fishing quarter and the Vizcaya Bridge with its suspended transporter gondola give the shore a different character.
