About Castello Alfonsino – Forte a Mare (Brindisi)

The Alfonsino Castle, also known as the Aragonese Castle or the “Red Castle” for the color it takes on at sunset, is a significant military fortification located on the island of Sant’Andrea, at the mouth of the port of Brindisi. It was built in 1481 at the initiative of Ferdinand of Aragon and later expanded under Philip II with the addition of the Forte a Mare. Used as a military base until 1983, the castle is now managed by the Italian Ministry of Culture. It is open to visitors only through guided tours, which are organized by ETS Le Colonne and must be booked in advance. There is no general entrance ticket, but participation in the guided visit is paid.
