Sailing route: from Naissaare to Lohusalu

The route from Naissaare to Lohusalu (approx. 15.8 NM) begins at the southeastern tip of Naissaar. Departing the island, pay close attention to shallow areas and scattered rocks near the coastline—especially within the first mile. Maintain a safe offing until clear of the island’s southern shoals.

Once in open water, you’ll cross the Gulf of Finland’s southern approaches. This area sees moderate commercial traffic, including ferries and cargo vessels bound for Tallinn. Maintain a vigilant watch, especially near the main shipping lanes. Use AIS and radar if available, and avoid crossing ahead of fast-moving ships.

Wind and wave conditions can change rapidly, with short, steep chop developing in strong westerlies or northerlies. Swell may be more pronounced after prolonged winds. Monitor forecasts and be prepared for confused seas, particularly in the open stretch between Naissaar and the mainland.

If weather deteriorates, consider sheltering at Naissaare harbor before departure, or diverting to the protected marinas at Tallinn (to the east) or Kaberneeme (to the northeast) if already underway. Approaching Lohusalu, keep a lookout for local fishing gear and small craft, and follow marked channels carefully to avoid underwater hazards near the entrance.
