Oostende

Sea-facing harbour on an open coast with macrotidal conditions (about 4–5 m). Expect brisk coastal streams and short, steep seas in wind-against-tide; inside the breakwaters, basins include lock-controlled docks that are essentially level.

About Oostende

Roughly mid-coast in Belgium, Ostend pairs an exposed North Sea entrance with sheltered inner docks. Large tides shape the approaches and strengthen tidal set; on onshore winds, the sea state steepens quickly. Spring sea fogs occur. Behind the moles you’ll find dock basins, some accessed through locks and effectively tideless, tying the harbour into inland routes. Ostend also hosts the national MRCC coordinating maritime SAR. Plan around tide, visibility and busy port movements.
