Väddö marinas

Väddö is Roslagen's largest island, in Norrtälje Municipality north of Stockholm. Its character comes from a clear contrast: the sheltered inner waters and Väddö Canal lie to the west, while the eastern side meets the more open Åland Sea. It is a destination in its own right, with small communities, beaches, coastal walking and cycling routes, and a strong connection to the sea.

Väddö Canal is the key sailing feature. It provides an inside passage between Bagghusfjärden in the south and Väddöviken in the north, offering an alternative to the exposed coast when the route and vessel are suitable. The canal is part of the landscape rather than merely a shortcut: its banks, bridges, boats, and villages give this stretch a slower, more sheltered Roslagen character.

Väddö also sits within the historic route toward Åland. The sea crossing between Grisslehamn and Eckerö was an important postal connection for centuries, and the island still works naturally as part of a Sweden–Åland itinerary. On shore, Älmsta is the main service centre; the rest of the island is better approached for nature, beaches, local food, and small coastal stops.

On the water, use current charts for both canal approaches and the open coast. Check local depths, bridge and traffic information, speed rules, seasonal conditions, and the latest navigational notices before committing to the canal or an Åland Sea passage.

Best for: a sheltered canal passage, a nature-focused Roslagen stop, exploring the island ashore, or staging a route toward Grisslehamn and Åland.
