Manija Island is located in Western Estonia, in the southern part of the Gulf of Finland, between Kihnu Island and the Tõstamaa Peninsula. This 2 km² island is mainly covered with coastal meadows and thickets and is under landscape protection. Manija is one of the smallest islets in Europe with permanent human settlement. The island was settled when the population of Kihnu grew too large, and 22 families decided to move there. Today, Manija has 35 permanent residents whose main activities are fishing, knitting, and baking.
