Santander lies on the northern shore of its namesake bay in Cantabria. It combines the life of a major port with the atmosphere of a seaside resort: promenades follow the water, and the broad Sardinero beaches lie beyond the Magdalena Peninsula. The palace and park on the peninsula are among the coast’s most recognisable sights.
Across the bay, the urban waterfront gives way to the El Puntal sand spit and low green shores around Pedreña and Somo. City promenades, beaches and smaller coastal communities lie close together here.
