Italy Brindisi Monument
40° 38' 40" N, 17° 56' 49" EDominating the skyline of Brindisi’s harbor, the Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia (“Monument to the Italian Sailor”) stands as a powerful tribute to all sailors who lost their lives at sea. Rising 53 meters high in the shape of a ship’s wheel, it was inaugurated in 1933 and remains one of Brindisi’s most recognizable landmarks.
From the top of the monument, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the city, the harbor, and the shimmering Adriatic Sea – a perfect place to experience both the weight of history and the vast freedom of the sea.
Inside the monument lies a solemn crypt, where memorial plaques and an altar honor fallen sailors. Details such as anchors and pieces of historic naval equipment add to the atmosphere of remembrance. You can reach the top either by climbing the stairs or by taking the elevator – the view is among the finest in Brindisi.
At the monument’s base, there is a small pier where visitors may dock their motorboats, sailboats, catamarans, or other small vessels. Please note that no water or electricity is provided for boats, and there are no onshore facilities – it’s a simple mooring point for short stops and exploration.
If you’re coming from the Approdo delle Indie area, the easiest way to cross to the opposite side of the harbor is by taking the STP ferry boat. This short and affordable ferry ride brings you directly to the monument’s vicinity. For up-to-date timetables and fares, visit https://www.stpbrindisi.it.
The Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia is located about 2.7 kilometers from Marina di Brindisi, making it an easy and pleasant walk or bike ride along the waterfront.
