About Fontana Monumentale di Piazza Cairoli

The Fontana Monumentale di Piazza Cairoli, commonly known as the Fontana delle Ancore or “Fountain of Anchors,” is one of Brindisi’s most iconic landmarks. Located in the heart of the city, between the railway station and the port, it serves both as a meeting point and as an elegant architectural centerpiece.
The fountain was inaugurated in 1937, commissioned by the Acquedotto Pugliese (the Puglia Water Authority). It is built from local Trani and Fasano stone, adorned with alabaster details. The circular basin is surrounded by four anchor sculptures, symbolizing Brindisi’s maritime heritage — a feature that gave the fountain its popular nickname.
Combining function and beauty, the Fontana Monumentale features graceful water jets, a marble balustrade, and evening illumination that enhances its charm. Recent restoration work, including the installation of modern LED lighting, has brought new life to the monument. Today, it remains a beloved gathering place and a symbol of Brindisi’s history, identity, and enduring connection to the sea.
