Durrës sits on Albania’s central Adriatic coast and functions as the country’s main maritime gateway, located close to Tirana. Durrës maintains regular ferry links with Italy (a typical reference route is toward Bari), making it a practical Adriatic crossing node.
Historically known as Dyrrachium, it was the starting point of the Roman Via Egnatia across the Balkans. A major landmark is the Roman amphitheatre, listed on Albania’s UNESCO Tentative List. Fragments of the historic fortifications remain a visible reminder of the city’s Byzantine/Venetian defensive past.
