Distances between Koper and Piran Bay are short. Sailing here follows the coast rather than an island chain: the port city of Koper gives way to fishing-town Izola, historic Piran and the resort of Portorož.
Summer brings warm water and lively waterfronts. The sea is still cool in spring, and autumn weather is less settled. Bora can strengthen quickly in the Gulf of Trieste; short distances between towns do not remove the influence of wind.
Ashore, Istrian history is evident in narrow streets, Venetian buildings, olive groves and salt pans. On this compact coast, time on the water combines naturally with town life.
