О маршруте

The Tallinn–Hanko route (61.2 NM) crosses the Gulf of Finland from Estonia to Finland, starting at Tallinn’s harbor and finishing at Hanko. Departing Tallinn, expect busy commercial traffic, including ferries and cargo vessels, particularly near the harbor approaches. Maintain a sharp lookout and monitor VHF channel 16 and local traffic channels. The initial miles feature numerous navigation marks and shallow banks; keep strictly to the recommended fairways and avoid venturing outside marked channels, as unmarked rocks and shoals are common.

Once clear of Estonian coastal waters, the central Gulf is open and deep, but weather can change rapidly. With prevailing westerlies or northwesterlies, expect short, steep seas and possible cross-swell, especially in wind-against-current situations. Visibility can deteriorate quickly in fog. The route passes south of the main shipping lanes, but large vessels may still be encountered—use AIS and radar if available.

In deteriorating weather, suitable shelters include Dirhami (Estonia) or the Finnish archipelago east of Hanko, such as Jussarö or the islands near Tammisaari. Approaching Hanko, traffic increases again, and the area is dotted with islets and underwater hazards—navigate with care and updated charts. Always check the latest notices to mariners before departure.
