The French North Sea coast extends for about 140 km from the Belgian border to Pas-de-Calais and naturally connects to the eastern English Channel. 

The area is defined by large tidal ranges (up to 6–7 m), strong tidal streams, and extremely dense commercial shipping, especially near the Dover Strait—one of the busiest sea lanes in the world. 

Yachting is feasible but requires precise tidal and weather planning, as well as strict compliance with Traffic Separation Schemes (TSS). The coastline is mostly low-lying, with sandy shallows and banks that shift over time. Historically, this region has been a key naval and commercial zone for France, resulting in strong port infrastructure but a relatively limited number of classic leisure marinas.
