Calais lies at the narrowest point of the English Channel—the Dover Strait—one of the busiest shipping corridors in the world. Tidal streams are very strong and can exceed 3–4 knots, making precise timing of entry essential.
The port is primarily focused on ferry and commercial traffic to and from the UK, with yacht areas embedded within the main port infrastructure and subject to strict traffic regulations. Breakwaters provide good shelter from sea conditions, but maneuvering is complicated by traffic density and currents.
For yachts, Calais is typically a technical or weather stop before or after a Channel crossing rather than a long-stay destination.
