О маршруте
The Tallinn–Hiiumaa yacht route (approx. 72 NM, 14–15 hours at 5 knots) starts from Tallinn’s harbor, heading WSW through the Gulf of Finland and across the open Baltic towards Hiiumaa. Departing Tallinn, expect dense commercial traffic, especially near the main shipping lanes and ferry routes—maintain vigilant watch and use AIS if available. The initial miles feature numerous navigation buoys and shallow patches; keep strictly to marked channels until well clear of the approaches.
After leaving the Tallinn approaches, the route crosses open water with fewer navigation marks. Beware of isolated shoals and underwater rocks, particularly near the Estonian coast and as you approach Hiiumaa. The Baltic can develop steep, short-period waves with wind shifts, especially in strong westerlies or after frontal passages. Swell is generally moderate but can become confused near shallows and in wind-against-current conditions.
For shelter in deteriorating weather, consider diverting to Lohusalu or Dirhami harbors on the mainland, or Heltermaa on Hiiumaa’s east coast. These offer good protection and facilities. Always check updated charts and local notices to mariners for temporary hazards or restricted areas along the route.
