Kärdla sadam → Kalana jahisadam

The route from Kärdla to Kalana (approx. 31.7 NM) leads southwest along the northwestern coast of Hiiumaa, then south along the western edge of the island. Departing Kärdla, maintain a careful watch for shallow patches and underwater rocks near the harbor approaches—these are common in the area and require precise navigation, especially in reduced visibility or on a falling tide.

The initial segment skirts the coastal shallows; keep well off the shoreline to avoid unmarked rocks and sandbanks. Traffic is generally light, but fishing vessels and local ferries may be encountered, particularly near harbor entrances and inshore routes. Maintain a good lookout and monitor VHF channels for traffic advisories.

As you round the northwestern tip and head south, the fetch from the open Baltic can create a moderate to steep chop, especially with westerly or northwesterly winds. Be prepared for confused seas at headlands and where currents interact with wind. If weather deteriorates, sheltered anchorages are available at Kärdla (departure), Kõrgessaare, or in the lee of Hiiumaa’s western coves before Kalana.
