The Hanko to Tammisaari route (approx. 22.4 NM) leads through the intricate Finnish archipelago, requiring vigilant navigation. Departing from Hanko, you’ll immediately encounter a dense field of skerries and islets. Numerous underwater rocks and shallow patches are common, especially near the start and mid-route; constant attention to updated charts and echo sounder is essential. Many hazards are unmarked, and some rocks may be just below the surface.

Traffic is moderate near Hanko, with local fishing boats, ferries, and occasional commercial vessels. As you progress northeast, traffic thins but expect leisure craft, especially in summer. The route weaves through narrow channels and open stretches—maintain a proper lookout and monitor VHF for local traffic advisories.

Wave conditions are generally moderate, but exposed legs between islands can be choppy with wind against current, creating short, steep seas. The archipelago offers some shelter, but sudden squalls or wind shifts can quickly raise uncomfortable chop, especially in open sections.

For shelter, several natural anchorages and guest harbors are available en route. Notable options include the islands east of Hanko and the protected bays near Jussarö and closer to Tammisaari. Always identify nearby bolt-holes in advance, as weather can change rapidly.
