Set on the edge of the Wadden Sea, Harlingen fronts the shallow tidal flats and buoyed channels that lead to the Frisian islands. Daily ferries link the port with Terschelling and Vlieland. Water levels swing with the tide, and wind-against-tide can kick up a short, steep chop on the approaches. The historic centre’s basins are tidal and briefly close at high water when flood-gates are in use, so timing matters. Traffic can be busy in season, and manoeuvres near fairways and bridge lines reward early planning. As everywhere on the Wadden, passages hinge on visibility, tide windows and staying in the marked channels.
