Set deep inside the Scheldt estuary, Antwerp sits where the tidal range increases inland and currents can be strong, so timing matters—especially in wind-against-tide. Beyond the sea locks the dock system and canals are largely non-tidal, offering predictable berths within the city. Since 2022 the port operates as Port of Antwerp-Bruges, with leisure access to the city basins via locks such as the Kattendijk.
